windows can't check for updates

Hi everyone,
I have Vista Bussiness (32) sp2
I had avast antivirus installed since day 1 and now it's MacAfee and Windows Defender.
I cannot check for updates as I get the message: "windows can't check for updates".
I am looking for a solution that will not require to reinstall windows as it might cause problems with programs using sql server like SAP B1 etc.
I'll appreciate any assitance,
