Reinstall/Repair WMP

I got a virus which I was successfully able to remove from my system but
now Windows Media Player doesn't work.
I get the following error:

Clicking yes just takes me to their website where there isn't a version
of WMP for Vista, only for XP.

From what I've found there isn't a way to reinstall WMP for Vista. Is
there a way to repair this error?

I just did that for another problem and it didn't fix WMP. I don't have
forum membership to that one. Are there any other steps to it?

Note: I have never tried that myself. So it may work - or it may not.

Initiate a file backup for your computer for All Programs. It will prevent losing your media files if saved on the local disk vice a portable hard drive.
Disconnect any periphery devices from the computer and then go to the Add/Remove programs and select "Remove Program-->Windows Media Player".
Reboot the computer and repeat the application removal for the Windows Media Format Run-time and Microsoft User-Mode Driver Framework Feature Pack 1.0.0. Then, reboot your system.
Download the latest version of Windows Media Player from Microsoft.com and re-install the application.

Neither Vista nor 7 allow uninstalling/reinstalling WMP in the traditional
sense, and MS does not offer a download to install over WMP. The only thing
you can try is going to Programs and Features and select "Turn Windows
features on or off". Turn WMP off, reboot, and turn it back on. I doubt it
will help, but the alternative is to do an in-place install, so it is worth
trying.
