I have a laptop computer running windows vista and it broke down. Is there a
way to deactivate windows vista and install windows vista on my desktop with
the same activation key?

Re: Vista
That's not a problem - well assuming it is a retail copy of Vista and not
one pre-installed by the pc manufacturer. If you have purchased the copy of
vista yourself then install it on your desktop as normal. When you come top
activate it will be refused (most likely, anyway). You have the option to
telephone the activation line. This is an automated line, but if the
automation doesn't activate your copy you will be put on to a real person.
When you speak to the real person, tell them that your laptop is no longer
working and the copy of Vista has been transferred to your desktop. They
should then supply you with the relevant activation code. Incidentally, you
must be in front of your desktop when you telephone. Also the copy on your
laptop must be destroyed. If your laptop is broken beyond repair then the
easiest thing to do is smash it completely or remove the hard drive and
smash that. If the laptop can be repaired, then you must reformat the hard
drive to remove all traces of Vista. You can't use the same copy of Vista on
two pcs.

There is no deactivation. If it's a retail version you would normally
uninstall it from the computer it's on then reinstall on the other computer
and activate, either through the internet or by phone if that's needed. In
this case if you're not going to destroy the old laptop, then take the drive
out from the laptop, attach it through an adaptor or put it in an external
drive enclosure, connect that to another computer and format the drive.
Then reinstall Vista on the new system.

If it's an OEM version, then by the license it can't be moved to a new
computer. If the one it's on dies, the license dies with it. Aside from
the licensing issues, depending on whether it's a branded OEM copy, it might
not even be possible to install on a different computer.
