stop incoming calls while downloading updates

Everytime I try to download an update etc, the phone rings and knocks me
off line. I have a dial up network with cyberhotline. Can someone tell
me how to turn off incoming calls while I am online. Thanks.

That doesn't make sense. If your phone is off hook with a modem connected
how can it ring? Do you mean that you have call waiting and that interrupts
the connection? If so check with your phone company how to temporarily
disable call waiting. This is normally done by dialing a certain code and
another to re-enable it later. The method may vary by area.
