I did not want this issue to be a dead end for some folks, like it was
for me. Most other threads were absolutely correct when he said it was
a BIOS setting. But first, make sure the following are correct:
1. Drive Jumper settings
2. IDE cables correct (and functioning)
3. *****IMPORTANT**** *Even though you may not be using RAID, SATA,
etc, *enable those controllers anyway*! After wresting with this issue
for 24hrs, I finally set everything back to "Default" and "Optimized",
and the only real difference was the *"Promise controller" and SATA
Functionality* having been enabled.
Once that happens, you will not see the "exclamation point" error at
the bottom of the Drive Setup/Format page during Vista Install. I hope
this helps someone else.... Good luck! I can now finish my install.
