Office Home and Student 2007 from Dell to HP

I have a Dell XPS 420 with Mic.Office Home & Student 2007, Vista Ultimate
32bit, wired to a Linksys WRT600N router. The disc I have from Dell says
(OEM). I have been researching for an hour but I can not seem to find a
clear answer. I just ordered a HP dv7t series laptop, they did not have
Ultimate 32bit, so I ordered Home Premium 32bit, with Microsoft Works 9.0.

It is my understanding that I can install this H&S 2007 on my home network
system (desktop & laptop). What is the best way to do this without running
into trouble. Can I just pop the Dell OEM disc into the HP? Should I make a
copy of the disc? Should/Could I backup the program with my data and
transfer it from the desktop to the laptop? What is the best way to go about
this? The laptop will have 2 250gb hdd.and a WIFI5100agn link. Can the
program just be transferred over through the sharing portal?

Also, can I update my Home Premium to Ultimate with the disc I have? Will
this make things more compatible? I don't really know the difference between
the Ultimate and the Home Premium.

I am going to have an operation and be bedbound for a while so I would like
to be ready to get this done as soon as the HP laptop arrives. Thank you in

If I understand you correctly, you want to have your copy of Office
Student on two machines, right? If the EULA permits that, just
install it on the second machine using the disc that came with the
Dell.

Nope. One machine per copy of the OS.

When you got the Dell did it come with a separate Office H&S Office 2007
installation disk and 3 licenses license or did a trial copy of Office 2007
H&S come preinstalled with the system?

It came with Microsoft Office Home & Student 2007 installed on my computer
(included in the price I paid for the Dell desktop) AND it came with a
sealed Microsoft Office Home and Student 2007 installation disc which has
remained sealed until now. It has a label on the packaging that says
Microsoft....DELL Microsoft Office Home & Student 2007 (OEM). (What does
OEM stand for)?

It has a product key. The CD says licensed only for distribution with a new
PC. Get product support from the manufacturer of the PC. I am thinking that
since it will be me that is installing it on my machine from my same network
that there shouldn't be a problem. I am the only one that uses the computers
in my house so they would never be used at the same time.

Go for the Gold. You're clear.

A Dell OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) license for
Microsoft Office can only be installed and activated on the
original Dell computer it came with. You cannot use the license on
a different computer.

Hi,

OEM=Original Equipment Manufacturer.

Generally, this phrase means that the software is designated only for the
system it was supplied with. Whether or not you can install it on the HP
system depends on what the license agreement states. Most OEM distributions
differ from retail versions in that you don't get the option of transferring
it to a different machine. A retail version of Office allows for multiple
installations by the end user, an OEM version may not.

If this is the case, you may find that the software will refuse to install
on the HP system.

Actually the OP is not in the clear, although retail versions of Home &
Student are permitted on up to 3 PC's, the OEM version is not.

Why research? All you need do is read the Office 2007 EULA that is on
that CD, as well as your hard drive.

Were it not an OEM license, that would be true. However, OEM licenses
are not transferable to another computer, under any circumstances.

Purchase another license of Office 2007 for the second computer.

It shouldn't work. It's probably BIOS-locked to the original Dell to
prevent piracy.

No. You'll need to purchase a retail Upgrade license for that purpose.
