Power icon no longer appears in notification area

I have an Acer laptop with Vista (SP1). Recently I have noticed the power
icon no longer displays in the notification area. If I go to Taskbar and
Start Menu Properties, Notification Area tab, the Power check box is grayed
out and not checked. This may have happened as a result of installing SP1,
which I did two weeks ago, but I am not sure. I did not notice this until
three days ago.

I have tried a registry edit I found online (deleting any keys regarding
"iconstreams"), but this did not help. Rebooting does not help. Logging on
as a different user does not help.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

thing with you reg backup, etc before hand.

Hi Mongoose,

This tutorial may be able to help you out. You will not have the Power
icon available (not grayed out) if you are not using a laptop on battery
power or have a desktop with a backup USP battery connected though.

I tried all three methods, plus the manual way. The registry entry did exist
for the manual way so I removed it, but I stll have no power icon. It's
stilil grayed out in Taskbar and Start Menu properties, too.

I tried doing a system upgrade, which repairs Windows. This is what I had to
do in order to get SP1 to install and it worked quite well. However, as a
result of installing SP1, now I cannot do that because Windows now is a
version newer than the install DVD, so it won't let me do an upgrade. I'm
just going to hope the machine will somehow warn me when the battery is
almost dead. I'll see if I can find media that includes SP1. Perhaps that
will allow me to do an upgrade.
