I'm assuming by now that you have solved your problem.
However, if not, you can try F8 while booting and go to
LAST KNOWN GOOD CONFIGURATION (ADVANCED)
hopefully your system will allow you to log in.
In my case (I'm using Vista Ultimate 32bit), I have tried to load
PC-Tools Antivirus and something got corrupted. Once I had logged in
using the above method, I went to the Control Panel - Programs, and
uninstalled the corrupted application.
Things went normally after that procedure.
