installed 2nd copy key error

I just bought my laptop hp in febuary 2007. It came with a vista windows cd.
the message I read was to insert the cd and upgrade to ultimate. There was no
mistake how I read the message from Microsoft. I inserted the cd but it auto-
-mactly installed the same version and now I had 2 copys in my laptop.
I had no choice but to format because the hard drive was on overload. About
to crash. I was instucted to format. When I denied it the first time
(formatting)
it formatted anyway. I couldn't stop it.
Now, I can't register my windows!. I already validated windows, registered
my
windows ID, the updates help me get most programs back and updated some
drivers. I still can't register my windows. No other cd,or version was used.

what came with my new laptop. help please! how do I get my windows registered
with the orginial key?
