Get rid of text under icons

Hi there,
Hopefully this is in the correct discussion group.

I keep seeing that in order to delete text under icons, this alt 255 thing
and quite frankly it's not working for me.
I have tried many varied formats of this "feature".

I'm using a Dell laptop XPS M1530 running Windows Vista.

I'd like to have the cleaner look on the desktop, can anyone enlighten me
please?
