Help With Vista, New Partition on Xternal Drive.

Ok, im here asking for help,
first of all, i got myselt a new laptop,
came with vista.
But now, i want to install XP to my
external hard drive, i've already
tried the normal way, which is
inserted the windows xp original cd,
booted from it, formated, the new external hd.
but, when it comes to restart after the formating,
it restarts but the screen goes black.
and after that nothin happens.
a friend told me that there is a special way of
doing it, but he didnt tell me how to.
so im here asking for help, ..

XP cannot be installed to an external drive.
