what could be the reason for vista hanging

So I finally get Vista Home Premium, I boot from disk and it starts to
hang before even the box comes up asking you to select keyboard layout
and language. Throughout the whole installation it hung. So a few hours
later after I've sat through the installation Vista loads up and it
hangs at a black screen right after the Microsoft Windows Vista loading
bar. If I wait long enough I eventually get logged on but it still hangs
whenever opening "My Computer" or "Control Panel" or basically any
application. No matter how many times I boot it up it always hangs at
the black screen. I'm running Windows Vista Home Premium 64 bit.

If anyone can tell me why this is happening and what I need to
upgrade(if that is the case) it will be greatly appreciated.

My Specs

AMD athlon x64 X2 AM2 4200+
EVGA 8800Gt Superclocked 512MB GDDR3
5 GB of Ram [Mushkin EM2-6400 DDR2-800 4GB (2x2GB) CAS 5-5-5-12][OCZ
DDR2 PC2-5400 667MHz 1GB (2x512MB) ]
Asus M2R32- MVP
350w power supply
Im just using the onboard soundcard.

For a start, you are mixing RAM speeds, and sizes.
Pull out the 2 x 512 667 MHz sticks, and lock them in a drawer.

Reinstall Vista using just 2 Gig of 800MHz RAM.
After install add the other 2 of 800MHz.
And leave it at that.

If you still have probs, take out the fancy Graphics card, put in a generic
one until install done; then install the fancy one.
