Vista Home Premium won't start anymore
I have Vista Home Premium on a Gateway laptop it has been working fine.
Yesterday I closed the laptop to place it into hibernate/suspend mode and
when I reopened it the computer was tragically slow. The hard drive was
being accessed and the touchpad mouse would not move freely it was very
jerky. I left the computer alone and turned on for a couple hours, just in
case Window Defender or some Defrag was causing the sluggish behavior. When
I returned the computer was in the same state. It went to have it shut down
and it stayed on the shut down screen for over 4 hours so I powered down the
laptop by holding down the power button.

When I tried to restart it won't complete. It accesses the hard drive for
about 45 seconds and then the hard drive access light stops and the moving
bar that shows when you start just keeps moving. I left the laptop like this
overnight and it did not start. today I started the system in safe mode and
did a system restore that says it completes but when it restarts in regular
mode it locks up as before.

I installed AVG Free virus scan about 2 days ago but the computer worked
fine before that and initially after the installation. Any suggestions on
what to try or what I can look at to see what is stopping it from starting up?

Thankx in advance for your help.

You do not say, so I have to assume that you already had an ant-virus
installed before you added AVG.

Uninstall the original one.
2 anti-viruses can cause your problem, as you can't have 2 of them running
at the same time.
And if 1 is expired, it is still checking up to its expiration date.
