Nero Issue

Hi All. I used to have Nero OEM on my PC. I had run the Vista Upgrade
Advisor and it said it need to be removed. I did and I bought and installed
Nero 7 Ultra (Vista compatible). I re-ran the Upgrade Advisor and it was
fine. BUT, when I try and install Vista, after it runs the compatibility
check it still says I need to uninstall Nero Burning ROM. I completely
uninstalled Nero and delete the directory under Program Files but it keeps
giving me this error and won't continue installing.

1. How do I fix this

2. WHY does Upgrade Advisor say the system is fine but the actual install
finds problems??? What good is running the advisor if it doesn't match the
install?

Two GOOD questions.

The Upgrade Advisor should be looked at as mostly a MARKETING tool.
You can't really blame Microsoft, you wouldn't stay in business long
if you say your latest product may cause millions of your customers
problems.

You see the whole truth once you actually TRY to install Vista. What
the Advisor may have passed or said oh, this shouldn't be any
problems, may and likely will become REAL problems which often halt
the install process in some BSOD unless and until whatever Vista is
choking on is resolved.

A lot of major name software like Nero and Easy Creator that deal with
CD/DVD burning have a long checkered history of causing nightmares
when left on a system then trying to upgrade the OS. It isn't that
this software is bad, rather is a tangled mess with tentacles that go
all over the place, so they don't always clean up after themselves
totally when you try to uninstall them. One, I forget which requires a
special clean up tool that scrubs the Registery.

Is there still an entry for Nero in the XP Registry? If so, perhaps
deleting that would get rid of the problem.

There is a cleanup tool on the nero webite.

Thanks all. I found the issue. The Nero OEM version was installed in a
directory called "Ahead" under Program Files. The current version of Nero
works fine but the set up scan must "see" that folder (and the Nero folders
underneath) and that caused the problem. I deleted it and it installed
fine. Now if I could just get all my other programs working again

I've been asking that same exact question here for weeks...

Best I can get is:
You "should have known" your hardware wouldn't work or
You "should have known" your software wouldn't work

I'm still waiting for one of the zombies to spew:

All I can say is "good job marketing department...again"

It is because the advisor does not actualy test each hardware and software
product on your system it only check to be sure it follows the Vista rules
for how a product should run properly by checking the product agaist the
Vista WHQL which does to see if the product does what the vendor or if the
vendor has supplied softare to make the product workas the vendor says it
will do ortthe installation of the software product destroys the ability of
other software applications to work properly.
With the RTM release MS incorpoarated just under 20,000 drivers on the DVD
and has since qualifed at least just as many more.

Absolutely, and the number one reason Microsoft is on top. MARKETING.

In fairness, I'm about to relate a TRUE story about Microsoft support.
It goes back, way back to the Windows 95 era, but interesting.

Somehow I caught a BSV (boot sector virus) and just couldn't get rid
of it. I really goofed up in being dumb enough to somehow copy the
virus to my only copy of my floppy boot disk. This proves NEVER mess
with your computer when you're tired.

Anyway, I somehow got a hold of some Microsoft engineer after being
switched around from typical support "help" in a near 90 minute phone
call. I forget the guy's name by he walked me through several fixes
that didn't work so he offered to mail me a copy of his boot disk.
This Microsoft guy traveled a lot for Microsoft and on his dime called
me twice from two distant locations to first see if I got the floppy,
then the next day to see if that cured the problem.

So as often as I take Microsoft to task for doing something
boneheaded, if you get the right person sometimes like with anything
else you do get unexpectedly good service and totally free too.

The version on your CD may have been on the shelf for a while, and is not up
to the 7.7.5.1 level that Nero considers compatible with Vista.. there is an
updated full version available for download on the Nero website..
presumably, you will be able to use the credentials received with your
purchase of Nero 7..

Nero have a forum, FAQ, and contact info to enable you to resolve any
problems..

Hello David,
I experienced similar Nero issues after upgrading to Vista (from Win
XP). Nero Start Smart stopped working and my installed Nero program
advised I reinstall.
However, no matter what I did, Vista's add/remove would stop midway
( whatever function I attempted) when I attempted to change, add, or
remove Nero. I contacted MS Tech support for assistance. The MS
advice given me is that 3rd party programs should not be utilized and
that Vista's built in CD/DVD functions should be used.
To remove Nero, they had me download and install Microsoft's Windows
Install Cleanup Utility (MSicuu2.exe).
Using this utility program, I successfully removed Nero.
Feel free to email me if you would like additional info re Nero. Just
remove the uu from the beginning of my address.
