Vista 64 fresh install help!!??

I thought I was a smart guy, so I decided to build a new computer. I
did one before, but that was 4 yrs. ago. So here's what I have

Abit KN9-SLI mobo
AMD Athlon 64 3500
1GB PC 800 RAM (2x512)
Maxtor 300GB SATA HDD
Geforce 7300 GT (x2)

Everything is brand new out of the box, including a new tower/psu.
What do I need to do to install Vista 64??? (Obviously I've tried a
few times, but I don't want to bias your answer trying to solve my
attempts. I first want to see if I have the basic understanding down
right.)

Any help will be appreciated!!

THe DVD from Vista <G> the driver disk (CD or diskette) for the sata drive,
if you cannot select PATA compatibilty from the BIOS.
During setup from Vista , select load drivers let it load the SATA drivers
from diskette, USB stick (if you use a USB stick the drivers must be in the
root from the stick) or CD.

That should do the trick.

Ko.

RE: Vista 64 fresh install help!!??
Skull Leader,

Since you accomplished the simple tasks once, easily again you will
accomplish the task.

Suggestions (briefly):
1) Thoroughly read and follow the MB Setup Instructions, specifically the
BIOS Setup; allow your BIOS for controlling PnP, not the OS.
2) Thoroughly read and follow the simple HDD Setup Instructions.
3) Be certain for using the “advanced” HDD Setup feature.
4) Partition the “first” HDD Volume to be at least 1.5 Gig
5) Partition the second volume, or “remainder” of the HDD as you determine
best.
6) For reasons that you will later determine, it might be wise for
partitioning the HDD to have three volumes; the first volume at least 1.5
Gig, the second volume for Vista, and a third (last) volume with
approximately 35 to 50 Gig; if you do not later use the third volume for
storage, no problem.
7) The first HDD 1.5 Volume will be used for BitLocker (provided you have
BitLocker).
8) Before inserting Vista’s DVD inside your optical drive, have all major
devices connected to your PC, as printer, modem, and broadband.
9) Since you currently have the ability for searching Online; search
Microsoft for Vista information for using the best that Vista provides when
properly Installed, and for preventing pre-install and/or post-install
conflicts.
10) After Vista is Installed, be certain for faithfully reading
the Help and Support Files.
11) Likely, you have visited the below URL, if not, check it out: also,
there are so many Vista Sites would be near impossible for listing...

Re: Vista 64 fresh install help!!??

Koze. I did what you said and had the following problems:

1) When I went to install the drivers, I first put the Maxtor cd in. I
found the Sata drivers, but only after unchecking the "hide drivers that
are not compatible . . ." I then found and installed a driver for
"Windows x64 Maxtor Sata 300 pci card" Thinking that that probably
wasn't right, I inserted the ABIT cd and (also after unchecking the
"hide incompatibe drivers" box found some drivers for a Silicon Image
Sata drivers and installed that one.

Installation continued until it rebooted a couple of times then I got a
BSOH (blue screen of horror) The screen said there was a problem
detected and windows shut down the computer to protect it. then on a
separate line it had MEMORY_MANAGEMENT all by itself. It also
explained that if this is the first time seeing the error reboot and
try again, if not make sure all hard&software are installed and updated
and ten it had some error codes and said it was collecting data for
crash dump.

2. I started over fresh and this time only installed the ABIT driver.
A the same point of the last failure, instead of the BSOH I got a
garbled screen: a large red and across the top, then just lines of what
looks like maybe some dialog box, but each line is shifted right an inch
making a diagonal pattern across the screen.

Mr. Schwarz 2: I put the Mobo together very precisely as per the
instructions, but I do not know how the PnP is controlled-I'll check
that. What simple HDD setup instructions? What is Bitlocker?

p.s. I was typing this message about two hours ago on my desktop PC
(the one I built 4 years ago) and it randomly rebooted. It's been
doing that now for about 4 months. Usually it runs a chkdsk then
loads, but now it says windows could not start and I need to replace
the "hal.dll." Luckily, my wife bought a laptop a few months ago and I
can access the net.

Re: Vista 64 fresh install help!!??
Skull Leader,

Well, no offense, it appears that a very simple task has become very
complicated.

Previously, should have provided the below URL that discusses "most" every
thing you are seeking:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/pro...ls/backup.mspx

Also, the BIOS can be modified during pre-boot, and should be discussed
within the MB Instructions. By the way, it is not needed or necessary for
"manually" installing the drivers that you discussed...leave that
auto-install job to Vista.

Don't forget, many others have made install mistakes as you described.

Re: Vista 64 fresh install help!!??

Alrighty folks, I am writing to you now from my new computer.

First I realized the since I was trying to install an oem version that
I probably needed the OPK, but in the end that did not help.

Then I thought I should do what some other people had mentioned. I
entered the BIOS, set the correct voltage and timing for my ram,
disabled all LAN and 1394 controllers and BAM: a clean install.

Thanks for your help!
