will not go to screen saver

I have a new dell pc that came with vista home premium pre-installed. The
machine will not go to screen saver no matter what I try. Does anyone have
any suggestions?

I have no wireless anything. I use a Creative optical mouse. I've gone
through the Control Panel controls a number of times, even reset and
restarted. Still no screensaver.
