I am attempting to upgrade my XP SP2 to Vista Home but it just hangs at the

Looking in the setup log dosn't show anything, the last entries in the file

I've left it for hours at this and nothing happens, no errors, nothing.

Out of curiosity here, did you ever dual boot this system with another os?
I know that I installed a long time ago on my old Win98 machine, Solaris
x86. A UNIX os. And I was able to dual boot it. I got tired of it
after a while and just inserted a micro floppy and booted it with a back
up copy of windows to do an FDISK/MBR on the hard drive.
Well, after rebooting I got an OS not found error. I then used the OEM
CD to reinstall the os and after the installation was done, I still got
an OS not found error. Apparently some things are not overwritten or
erased and may be your problem. But then that is my guess.

Hmmm... you may want to check with Dell and see if they have any new
drivers for the download. From all that I've read, it is the drivers
that seem to be causing the majority of problems.

Re: XP2 Upgrade to Vista Home Premium hangs at 'Gathering Informat
Just wanted to post a solution that worked for me with this exact issue.
I was upgrading from XP home with all updates to Vista home premium sp1. It kept hanging at "gathering files", I searched for answers and tried a few but nothing worked. On about my 6th attempt to upgrade when it got the the same point "gathering files 0%" and it just hung there I called up task manager(control, alt, delete), I then clicked on processes and clicked "end processes" and then everything continued with my update with no further issues. I hope this solution can help others with the same issue. I was ready to give up.
