Vista Upgrade w/ Clean Install on top of XP possible?

If I bought Vista upgrade and wanted to do a clean install (as has
been discussed on here and DailyTech), is it possible to do on my HD
with XP already installed? Usually the install gives you the option
of reformatting a drive before installation. Is that a possibility in
this case, or does the Install disc somehow know that XP is on the
drive?

Should I just reformat the disc and then restart and do the clean
install just to be safe?

If you read the article again you will see it says to do an upgrade
first...for which you will need XP installed.
And then do a clean...format partition install.....following their
instructions
