Vista Update Retail is different?
Some of you had trouble to make a clean install of Vista with the update
version. The reason is that Vista update needs an installed and activated XP
on the machine. But could it be only related to versions of the action pack,
TechNet and volume licensing program?

Microsoft Germany says that the RETAIL version of Vista update just needs
the CD of XP or Windows 2000 during the setup and not a completely installed
Windows on the harddisk. So it is like any Windows version before. What do
you think?

Update: MS has just called back the questioner. It´s like you have said, no
way to make a clean install without an installed XP.
Sorry for the (new) confusion.

Then, you cannot reinstall your Vista.

Re: Vista Update Retail is different?
If you purchase Vista Upgrade and install using Windows XP as the qualifier,
you should not sell Windows XP.
At that point the Windows XP license is tied to the Vista license and they
can not be separated unless Vista is removed from the computer.
If you plan to sell Windows XP, purchase a full version of Vista and not an
upgrade.

Re: Vista Update Retail is different?
You do not have the right to transfer the XP to another person because you
are still using the license. The XP licesnse is tied to the Vista upgrade
edition license.

Re: Vista Update Retail is different?
I think that the link you supplied is totaly inadequate and I am amazed that
any knowledble person at MS approved it since it only covers a subset of the
possible scenarios. For example it does not cover what options are available
if you are running a 32bit version of XP on a 64 bit system and you want to
upgrade to Vista 64 with the upgrade license.
After reading Colin's posts in this newsgroup it is apparent that there are
far more scenarios then the simple ones contained in the KB article.
