Dual Boot Problems
Good afternoon.

I am trying to install Vista alongside my current installation of WinXP Pro
and the bootmanager is driving me insane, I was hoping someone could help me
out.

I have a SATA drive which is partitioned into 6. The primary partition of
this drive contains WinXP with all the others put aside for downloads,
backups, music etc...
I then have a second IDE drive with a primary partition containing Vista.

Currently dual booting is very simple, plug the IDE drive in and it boots to
Vista, restart and unplug the IDE drive and it boots to WinXP. However, this
is far from ideal! I have accessed the bootmanager program in Vista, which I
assume is the one to work with as Vista is obviously assuming priority during
bootup. The problem is, it doesnt seem to be able to locate the WinXP
partition, which i guess has something to do with it being on a SATA disk.

Could someone please tell me how this is supposed to work? I'm really
starting to miss boot.ini

Regards

Ryan Heath

Re: Dual Boot Problems
Vista is writing the bootmanager to the first IDE drive in the system.
If you want to have the bootmanger and dual booting working from the SATA
disconnect the IDE during setup.

You are able to install a tool from Neowin and another side ((easyBCD or
Vistabootpro) do a search foir it) and and correct it that way.

Re: Dual Boot Problems
Thanks for the quick response koze, I am trying to install vista on the IDE,
did you mean disconnect the IDE when installing WinXP??

Last time I tried to put them both on the same drive Vista messed up the
partition tables and XP didnt like it, even though they were on seperate
partitions??

Re: Dual Boot Problems
If you have XP installed on the SATA drive and XP's bootmanager is on that
drive you have a problem.
If you install Vista on the IDE drive it doesn't see the bootmanager on the
sata drive.

If you install Vista on the IDE and want it to dualboot from the Bootmanager
you have to add the entry for XP to the BCD store from Vista.

The easiest way to do is using one of those two tools I mentioned.
There are some good documented intructions how to do so from within those
tools.

Tha's the only way or you have to start all over again and install XP first
a new with the IDE drive as primairy partition so the bootmanger is written
on there, then Vista again as a second then Vista incorparate the old
bootsettings.
