32bit SB - Produktkey can also be used for a 64bit installation
Hello,

I have heard of somebody, who has bought 32bit SB-Version of Vista, that
he is able to use the productkey also for a 64bit installation.

Is this right ?

Thanks
Thorsten

The product key is the same for x86 or x64 retail editions of Vista. The
pk's are different for each edition (Home Basic is different from Home
Premium, for example) but they are the same for both 32 and 64bit same
editions.

Same key is usable for both 32 and 64
However, unless he gets the Vista Ultimate (both full and upgrade)
version, he will have to order the 64 DVD

The question was about the systembuilder version. The cheap one.

Re: 32bit SB - Produktkey can also be used for a 64bit installation
No. The system builder (OEM) is intended for installation on a new
computer. Since you get either x86 or x64 but not both, the product keys
are completely unique. Obviously, once you install one edition the other
would not be going on a new computer anymore but replacing the first.
Systembuilder editions are not designed to replace anything so you only get
the edition of your choice and a unique product key for it.

Re: 32bit SB - Produktkey can also be used for a 64bit installation
It turns out he was talking about OEM. The whole idea of OEM precludes
getting both editions in the same package.
