Hi,
XP setup doesn't allow for anything other than a floppy. Vista does. Part of
the problem is the nature of how NTFS is implemented in Vista, there are
subtle changes that make for problems if you try to go back to XP. What you
will need to do is remove the existing system partition and create a new one
from the free space before you will be able to reinstall XP. Doing this will
cause the loss of all data on the volume, so be sure to copy off anything
that you deem to be irreplaceable.
If XP setup won't recognize the drive, you may need to turn to a third party
product to resolve this. Possibly too you may be able to boot from a USB
floppy, but that requires support from the system BIOS (check with the
vendor for the feasibility of this).
