Black Screen of Death During Vista Build 6000 Installation
On a Dell 700M Laptop 2.1Ghz Pentium, 2 Gb RAM, > 30 Gb available disk space,
Intel Graphics chipset, I got the black screen of death after all the basic
files were copied.

This was an upgrade type installation. I tried twice, once for an Ultimate
upgrade, the other for a Business upgrade.

I left the machine on overnight for the Vitsa Ultimate install but nothing
happened after the black screen.

In addition, powering off and back on again, then doing F8->Safe Mode
immediately causes Vista to back out the installation (it says installation
unsuccessful, restoring old operating system).

Does anyone have any clues? This is my third upgrade-type failure on recent
vintage, well equipped Dell laptops. This is bound to be an issue for more
users.

Sam - had similar problem with a HP with Intel chipset. Install was
successful after installing chipset upgrade - another problem - computer
came with Intel duo-core processor which required downloading update to
permit processor to work with Duo-Core.

Thanks AJR. unfortunately I don't think either one of the tips you mentioned
applies to the Dell 700m. It has the latest chipset drivers from the Dell
website at least and it doesn't have a duo processor.

But, thanks for suggesting the chipset - I'll check the INtel site for any
recent updates.

Re: Black Screen of Death During Vista Build 6000 Installation
Sam,

I'm having the exact same problem on a desktop machine with a Radeon 9600
and a motherboard with an nForce3 chipset. I feel that one of those two
pieces of hardware is causing the issue, though I don't know which. I had
this same problem with both Vista RC1 and RC2, I was hoping the RTM would
clear it up!

If anybody knows how to get around this it'd be GREATLY appreciated!

Cheers
Bill

I vaguely remember complaints with respect to the R 9600 under
Vista... perhaps you may wish to google for this...

(I have a R 9800 Pro on a nForce3 250 chipset board and no probs with
Vista.)

Re: Black Screen of Death During Vista Build 6000 Installation
Thanks Roy, good to know that the nForce3 250 chipset is working for some
people. I did Google for problems with the 9600 and didn't see anything that
looked epidemic ... I did run across a few problems but they seemed very
random.

I'd upgrade the video card but that machine is only used for business
applications and runs Windows XP flawlessly, so it's a bit of a waste of
money just to deal with something that's an issue only with Vista.

Thanks
Bill
