event id 1 system log

At every boot i get this error:
Initialization of the High Precision Event Timer failed due to a BIOS
configuration problem.
The operating system will use another available platform timer in lieu of
the High Precision Event Timer.

Contact your system vendor for technical assistance.
Initialization status: 1.

Event ID1 source HAL

running gigabyte GA-965P-DQ6 bios f9 latest, drivers latest for vista (the
worlds first premium ms certified mboard!)
3 sata 2 hard drives - not in raid.

no other hardware issues, dual booting - no errors in xp. No performance
issues - just a very annoying event ID that i can not fathom.

No response in a week from gigabyte.

Can someone please explain this error and its implications + any suggestions
to rectify.

Hi! I've got the same problem as you and haven't been able to figure it
out either.

Question: What video card are you using?

When I called Gigabyte, they suggested that it had something to do with
the video card and that I should try another on.

I've got two video cards running, an EVGA 7900GT KO and a Gigabyte
7600GT. I need two video cards because I've got three monitor. I
haven't had a chance to test yet becuase I need all three monitors for
my work.

However, I didn't know that I was only getting this error on a reboot,
which I just figured out because of your post. This will make it much
easier for me to test as I just need to boot to see if I get the error
and I can just try one on my two cards at a time.

I'll let you know what I find out, but likely won't be able to try this
till this weekend.

Have you learned anything new since your post?

BTW - My system specs:

- Gigbyte GA-965P-DQ6 with F9 BIOS
- Intel Core2 Extreme x6800 - Clocked at 3.2 GHz
- 4 GB Corsair memory
- Intel RAID 0, 4-320 GB SATA2 (1.2 TB), C drive
- GigaRAID 0, 2-320 GB SATA2 (620 GB), D drive
- Primary video - EVGA 7900GT KO
- Secondary video - Gigabyte 7600GT

I agree with you. I see no problems or performace issues; this is jus a
very annoying event ID. Hopefully we'll figure out what it is and can
fix it.

Hi Guys

This error is caused by a setting in your BIOS. I also have the
GA-965P-DQ6 motherboard (but with the new 10D beta bios).

You will need to look for and enable the HPET setting (and set its
option to either 32 bit or 64bit depending on OS your using)

HPET stands for High Precision Timer and Windows uses it for many
things including Audio/Video syncronisation and general video playback.

Once you enable it, your event log entries will clear up and errors
will go away.
