Hyper-threading hangs OS loading
Hi,
having experienced this problem already on Beta 1 version I now finally sat
down and begun tweaking my BIOS settings on my RTM Vista Ultimate. It turned
out that whenever I have Hyper-threading enabled in BIOS Vista hangs on boot,
on the screen where you see the progress bar (and the nice invisible Vista
logo). The progress bar just freezes.

I can boot the system in Safe Mode just fine and also if I disable HT in
BIOS. I've run Windows Update and there are nothing to update. I also cannot
find anything on this from on the net, nor on Intel, AOpen, etc. sites.

Any ideas on what I should do to get Vista working with HT enabled?

Here are the specs, please let me know if you need more details.

Computer: AOpen XC Cube EZ915
CPU: Intel P4 3.0 GHz HT (775)
MB: based on Intel 915G
RAM: 2 x 512 MB Kingston 3200 (removing one didn't make any difference)
BIOS: 1.11 (newest, from early 2005)
More details: http://xc.aopen.com.tw/Cube-m-specif...0.aspx?Auno=13

Sounds like you need updated motherboard/chipset drivers from your
motherboard manufacturer. I've run Vista on an Intel 2.8g HT computer with
no problems.

Did you install Vista with hyperthreading enabled?

Did you mean to ask if he installed Vista when HT was enabled in the BIOS?

Re: Hyper-threading hangs OS loading
This same freezing occurs on the first boot when installing Vista to a clean
HD if I have HT enabled.

The answer to your question is, yes, but on another machine, meaning that on
my old computer (2.4 GHz HT) this very same installation installed and worked
just fine. I actually moved the HD from old machine to new one, but this is
not the problem in this case since Vista won't even start installing on the
new machine.

I also suspect this is a driver issue, but is it possible to load
motherboard/chipset drivers during the Vista install before the first reboot?
I've done it with NT 4.0 and SCSI drivers, but are we talking about more
fundamental drivers here?

Re: Hyper-threading hangs OS loading
Did you fdisk and reformat the old disk in the new machine before trying to
install?
Do you have the latest BIOS for your MOBO?
I had no trouble installing Vista RC1 or RC2 on a HT system after doing the
above.

Re: Hyper-threading hangs OS loading
Strange, I have a HT CPU and have experience no problems with it. I only
mentioned it because in the past, if you added a CPU to an NT based OS, it
was a different HAL and would not boot. JW may be on the right track with a
BIOS update or perhaps there is an issue with your particular motherboard. I
know you have the latest official BIOS, sometimes motherboard manufacturer's
have beta BIOS's around, you could check the Aopen forums too.

RE: Hyper-threading hangs OS loading
Thank you all for your input.

AOpen support tried to repro the issue but didn't succeed. Hardware used was
essentially the same as mine:

CPU:Intel P4 3.0GHz
BIOS:R1.11
Micron DDR400 512MB*2
Maxtor DiamondMax 200GB
OS:Vista Ultimate Edition (build 6000)

The only difference was the memory brand (I have kingston), but having tried
2 different sets of memory I don't believe it has anything to do with this.

Gotta try to think if there could be something else...
