Need video drivers for Intel 810/810e/815/815e series video card
I installed Vista Beta 2 on an older Dell machine with an Intel
810/810e/815/815e series video card. All I can get is 8 bit 800x600 display
settings. I could not find Vista drivers on Intel's or Dell's web sites.
Are there any other drivers, something generic maybe which I could use on
this test machine? For this machine I am not prepared to buy a new video
card as it was headed for disposal anyway. I just wanted to show other
people in our organization what Vista looks like as we probably won't
upgrade our current machines, only replace them when they get old.

Unless either Intel or Dell releases drivers you are out of luck.

Re: Need video drivers for Intel 810/810e/815/815e series video card
I hit the same problem.
I planned to use some decent older computer (1.3GHz, 512MB, fast 40GB
HD,...) to test inhouse developpement compatibility. (That computer is
roaring with XP or 2003 EE.)
The best I got was Vista *pretending* to use 8 bit 800x600 display, when it
was clearly *4bit*.
And while using 16 colors mode, some options in dialog box are simply not
displayed... which is BAD !
I have been able to make my Samsung flat panel 19" seen after I provided
Vista with the constructor CD.
I tried to install the lasted 2000/XP driver for 815 from Intel. Vista was
happy, installed it and asked to reboot.
It did reboot, up to the desktop at nominal resolution.
At which point it "blued" with a Stop C2 ("Bad Pool Caller") !
I think this is only fair as the 815 borrow memory on main memory (if my
memory serves...) Thus I expect that the driver needs to cooperate with the
OS a little.
I hoped to be able to pick-up another driver (some kind of "super-VGA").
But no such thing is available.
The good think is that I spend quite some time in the various configuration
screens.
The bad thing is that I spend a sufficient time to find myself back with
"training wheel". Really looks like Apple to me ! Come on, Windows is for
grown-ups !
Bottom line : frustrating and infuriating experience... will stick to XP a
few more years, I guess.

When you installed the XP drivers in Vista did you run the install SetUp in
XP compatibility mode?

Re: Need video drivers for Intel 810/810e/815/815e series video card
We had another machine in the dust heap with a 32 MB card which I snagged
and it seems to work OK for demo purposes, but between that and 256 MB RAM,
I get no aero glass, but that's just a whiz bang feature that I can't see
much use for in a normal business environment.
Thanks anyway

Re: Need video drivers for Intel 810/810e/815/815e series video card
Aero actually speeds the computer up. If a system has the hardware to run
Aero much of the graphics processing is dome by the GPU instead of the CPU.
This can make a dramatic difference in the overall speed of Vista on a
hardware challenged pc. On a pc like you have, increasing the RAM and
upgrading the video card to one that supports Aero will make the computer
usable. This needn't cost a lot of money. Less than $200.00 should do it.

Re: Need video drivers for Intel 810/810e/815/815e series video card
Hello "JW"

I tried to run the setup in XP compatibility mode as well.
As well as I tried installing after disabling the "limited user mode" (Which
is a silly mode when you are *setting up* your system. Can be desirable on
normal daily usage, thought.)
I tried to tell where to find the folder which hold the .inf driver file.
It installs the driver. After the reboot I get the BSoD.
Rebooting to the last known good configuration, Windows complain on a
device which doesn't have a proper driver. It tells me to choose between
Standard VGA and the Intel 810/815... If I pick up the Intel driver, Vista
tells me that there is a wrong syntax in the .inf file !
Weird.

Just for the sake of completness :
I have been able to install an Intel driver on it.
That is, I used the Intel Embedded Graphic Driver (look for IEGD 5.1 on
Intel site)
Vista will still ask for a video controller driver, but it is working
perfectly in 32-bit colors mode and happy in 1280x1024.
That way I have a nice computer for basic windows Vista testing.
