Purchase Now or Wait for Vista?
I want to buy a Sony Vaio Model: VGN-TXN15P. The promo information says it is
Vista ready and there is a free upgrade. My son recommends that I wait until
I can buy the same computer with Vista already installed. Any opinions? Pro &
cons?

Do you need it?

If you buy now, you will hope to get the upgrade to Vista DVD about 6
to 8 weeks after Jan. 30, 2007.

If you buy later, around Feb. 1, 2007, you will get Vista installed
around Feb. 1, 2007.

Re: Purchase Now or Wait for Vista?
If you get the computer now it is up to you to obtain the necessary drivers
for all provided hardware. If you get it when Vista hits the stores, the
manufacturer will have provided all the drivers for their included hardware.

RE: Purchase Now or Wait for Vista?
Seeing the Sony upgrade offer, I wouldn't see a reason not to buy now. You
will be eligible for the Upgrade disc that includes all the necessary driver,
software upgrades. The only thing is that I do not see an option for
upgrading to Vista Ultimate. If you aren't concerned with the Vista edition,
then again, I wouldn't see a reason not to buy now. The only thing that I
did not see in your posting is what you are wanting in terms of Vista. Do
you have a preference in what edition you would like to have in the end?

Re: Purchase Now or Wait for Vista?
If I were you and if I can wait, then I will wait until Sony comes out with
VAIOs with Vista installed. The reason being that althought Sony may
provide you with an
upgrade to Vista, it is unlikely that you will get a complete recovery
partition or DVDs versus if you bought the machine with Vista installed. It
is more of a hassle if you have
to manually upgrade IMHO.......

IMHO, the recovery partition is a joke on the Vaio's. One other thing I had
thought about is that if you buy now, you have XP and the opportunity to
upgrade to Vista. Wheras, if you buy a pre-installed Vista, you won't have
the option for XP. If you find that you don't like Vista, you are out of
luck. This is not to say that you won't like Vista, but it's always good to
keep your options open.

One major downside to Vista that I see is the unfriendly attitude toward
DIY'ers. If you want a cablecard, then wait.

RE: Purchase Now or Wait for Vista?
Most people will want a new computer with Window Vista preloaded(installed)
to avoid frustration and calling tech support is something goes wrong with
the upgrade. Plus if you get computer with Vista installed you get new
hardware optimized for Windows Vista. Get a computer with Intel Core 2 Duo
processor which i think is way better than the Intel Core Solo processor.

RE: Purchase Now or Wait for Vista?
It is not critical that I get the computer now; although I would really like
to have it sooner rather than later. I don't want to make a short-sighted
purchase though because I couldn't wait a few months.

I am not particularly good with the technical side of computer things. I
have reformatted my old hard drive and reinstalled Windows XP Professional. I
did not run into any real snags; if I had I would have been in trouble as to
what to do. I did all of this after downloading instructions on "how to" off
the Microsoft website!

I am not sure I even care if I have Vista! I am perfectly happy with XP and
would probably not know the difference. But this is a major purchase for me
as the Sony Vaio is expensive so I don't want to make a short-sighted mistake
and buy too soon, later regreting that I don't have Vista.

What are the advantages or new features of Vista? Someone help!!! Thanks!!!

Vista is kind of a resource consuming XP SP4 - you may follow the
discussions in m.p.w.v.general...

If you are not a technical freak, no early-adopter, you may stay happy
with your XP SP2... and wait until Vista SP2 is on the shelves.

This depends on which version Sony offers. The Ultimate has everything,
including: the Media Center shell, fully redesigned backup application,
Tablet-PC add-ons ( pen writing pad, screen rotation, voice commands),
advanced wireless connectivity,
and the famous (but IMHO not so useful) Aero GUI.
You will feel the difference for sure.

Next goes Premium with less features, and so on down to Home Basic.
Probably you won't want any of Business versions.

No need to wait. Download Vista today from MSDN or elsewhere, try it,
then decide if you want to keep it (or install the Sony upgrade)
or... wait for SP1
