No CD/DVD burning facility in Vista
Hi,
I am having problems with one of my machines with Vista Home Premium
installed (release version). I have a Sony CD/DVD rewriter but vista is not
recoginising that it has Writing capablilty in Window media player 11 or in
Windows Explorer. However the backup and restore program allows me to backup
to it sucessfully.

Vista has recoginised the drive as SONY DVD RW DRU-510A SCSI CdRom Device
which is almost correct.

Has anybody else come across this issue?

Tech Spec
ASUS P5LD2 motherboard
Sony DRU-510A dvd re-writer (IDE)
Windows Vista Home premium

Vista DOES have basic CD/DVD burn built in.

Run REGEDIT, open up the following folders:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
SYSTEM
CurrentControlSet
Control
Class
{4D36E965-E325 -11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

After clicking on {4D36E965-E325 -11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} you should see two
settings on the right-hand side:
"Upperfilters"
"Lowerfilters"

Click on each of them, press DELETE and click YES.
Reboot

Re: No CD/DVD burning facility in Vista
Peter,

Thanks for the advice, however it did not cure the problem. I have been
playing in the background and got the device working.

For information the problem was the fact that the CD Writer was plugged into
the EIDE channel on the mother board. The ASUS P5LD2 mother board has 1 IDE
connector, 2 EIDE connectors, and 4 SATA connectors. The EIDE connectors will
support IDE devices, however Vista will treat devices connected on these as
scsi. When I connected the CD Writer to the IDE connected it changed the
CD-ROM device from
SONY DVD RW DRU-510A SCSI CdRom Device
to
SONY DVD RW DRU-510A IDE CdRom Device

and it now allows burning.

Don't ask me why microsoft treat the device differently but hey It works so
I'm now happy.

Cheers

Dave

Re: No CD/DVD burning facility in Vista
My wife's computer has an ASUS P5LD2 motherboard. It has an ITE 8211F IDE
controller (two channels) and an Intel IDE (one channel) - see the
motherboard manual. I've never been able to get the ITE IDE controller to
work properly with Vista during the Beta. Since we don't actually need it,
I've just ignored it - I've disabled it in the BIOS.

Both of the IDE controllers are Ultra IDE. I don't think "EIDE" vs "IDE"
has anything to with this issue; its most likely do with the controller
drivers (see for example
http://www.storagereview.com/guide20...nstdEIDE.html).

It is perfectly useless to know the right answer to the wrong question.
