dvd & cd drives gone after downloading windows update
Can anyone tell me how to fix this problem. I did what windows said to do
but they still are not there. I have error code 39, what ever that means.

See this, it applies to Vista and the Code 39 error.
You can no longer access the CD drive or the DVD drive, or you receive an
error message after you remove a CD recording program or a DVD recording
program in Windows XP: "error code 31" http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314060/en-us
