CDs and DVDs not recognized when inserted.
This is a Vista problem. When I open my CD drive or my DVD drive and insert
a new disc, like a game, Windows doesn't recognize that I've done so. The
autorun doesn't run. In my computer, it still shows the title of the last
disc that was in there. And when I doubleclick the drive I get an error. The
only way to run anything is to "explore" the disc and open the program. It's
only been this way for a couple weeks, wasn't always like that.

Re: CDs and DVDs not recognized when inserted.
As a house call person for our computer club, we are finding several bad CD
and DVD drives when initially setting up new computers! Especially on Dell
computers. Last week at out weekly session, a bad drive was seen on an HP
computer.

I've heard that some third-party programs that deal with CD/DVD burning
can cause such problems. I can't recall which ones, but you might
consider removing any/all such programs as a test.

Sorry guys, none of this has helped. I uninstalled every program within
reason that to do with my CD/DVD drives. Then "removed" the drives, rebooted
windows and let windows re-add them. Still having the same problem. Any
ideas?

RE: CDs and DVDs not recognized when inserted.
I tried the remedy offered here, changing the registry, but it did not work.
Aside from showing only the title of the disk that was in the drive when
booted up, if no disk was in the drive a dialog entitled Burn a Disc appears
and prompts for a title under the heading "Prepare a blank disc". If you want
to be explore the disk, you have to first select eject from the right click
menu, and re-insert the disk. As stated by Double9s, it will not autoplay the
disk.

Any suggestions?

RE: CDs and DVDs not recognized when inserted.
I also had the same problem. (new computer in March 07 w/Vista Home Premium)
I was able to burn a music cd and some photos although WMP would not play the
music or view the photos. I was able to on another computer. I followed the
instructions for changing the registry keys and I still cannot access the
disk in the cd/dvd drive and I now cannot burn. I've wasted so much time on
this. : (

I have the exact same problem...just started happening. I have a double boot
system and when I go to XP, the cd reads and autoplays fine. The problem is
somewhere in Vista. I don't have a solution but I hope to find it here.
