The cable may be the issue if it is an IDE ribbon cable. Vista requires a
40-pin 80-wire cable. Earlier computers were OK with 40-pin 40-wire cables,
but there is too much cross-talk on the old cables when used in the newer
(i.e. faster) computers. The 40 additional wires ground out this
cross-talk. Try a newer cable if you are using the cable that came with the
older cd drive.
