my computer won't reconize that my ipod has been put in

When I plug in my apple ipod 2nd generation my computer does not reconize it
but my ipod gets cahrged. Even itunes won't reconize it and I have to
download new songs. I tried unplugging other things and putting in the ipod
but the only thing that happens is that a charging sign shows up on my ipod.

Vista has a lot of USB problems. USB ports are "live" and provide charging
current, but Vista does not recognize that new software has been plugged in.
