I've upgraded the motherboard on PCs with XP before with out
reinstalling the OS. Upon boot-up the OS detects the new hardware and
reconfigures itself. No problem.
If you get a new motherboard with the same chipset, the changes Vista
would have to make would be minimal. You may not need to even
reactivate Vista. Besides the chipset there are other unique chips on
the motherboard. Amoung these are the sound codec, ethernet chip,
possible harddrive controller and possible firewire chip. I'm not
sure it changes in these would trigger Vista to have to reactivate.
