Vista not detecting CD-RW

I have a Dell Dimension 4500, 2.8 GHz P4, 1Gig RAM. I loaded Vista Home
Premium onto a spare partition so that I dual boot with XP. I have a
DVD ROM drive (Samsung) - which Vista detects and displays every time in
My Computer and Device Manager. But my NEC CD-RW it does not see - not
even in Device Manager. I can make it see the drive by using detect new
hardware and opening and closing the drive at about the same time. But
after a reboot it disappears. If a CD is left in the drive it will
detect it. XP sees both no problem (as does Xandros Linux which is on
another partition).

A Google search uncovered a registry hack - KB320553 but Upper and
LowerFilters as specified in that hack do not exist in the registry

Am I missing something? Does anyone know what causes this and how to fix.

Your still using CDRW? Every one by now should have at least one DVD-Burner
they have become streamlined and are cheap real cheap and really excellent on
www.newegg.com Best place to go for computer hardware and some software needs
at great discounts.

Hi Guy,
I am using Vista Ulimate 32bit on a fresh install and I have
exactly the same problem as you with your drives, in device manager it only
shows 1 drive, if I scan for hardware changes the other drive reappears
but,then on a reboot it is gone again. I am useing a Pioneer DVR 112 WRITER
and a SONY DVD ROM. I have tried a combination of other older DVD Drives
but, still get the same problem. So I have proved it is not the drives
themselves that are at fault. Has anybody got an answer to this problem?.
Drives are set as Master and Slave.

you can set your drives in their proparties. I has been a long time since i
have had to do that.

Follow the fix in the below KB. It's the issue with your Upper and Lower filter settings in the Registry

Administrative Tools\Computer Management\Storage\Disk Management
Right click drive, select Change Drive Letter and Paths

I have followed the instructions in the fix listed below but, when I go to
that area of the registry there is only the LOWER FILTER SETTINGS listed.
UPPER FILTER SETTINGS are not there.
Does anyone have any more knowledge on this.
