Serial Ports and Vista
Hi all,
I have a cash drawer that attatches to my computer via a serial port. My XP
machine crashed not long ago and I bought a Vista computer, but it does not
have a serial port available. I have a serial to USB cable adapter, but I
cannot get my cash drawer to open using it. Does anyone know how to open
the cash drawer using this adapter?
Thanks.

You need to contact the cash drawer hardware/software tech support to
see if Vista is supported.

RE: Serial Ports and Vista
John,
In addition to Malke's comments...
1.- Have you successfully installed the drivers for the USB to serial adapter?
2.- Is the virtual serial port number (e.g.: COM1, etc.) the same as it was
before in XP? Your software might be addressing the wrong port number,
preventing the communication with the cash drawer.
3.- The cash drawer program might be using a 32-bit driver incompatible with
your Vista version, whether 32-bit or 64-bit, and that would also make it not
to work.

Re: Serial Ports and Vista
You will need an adaptor with drivers that are Vista compatible.

Just yesterday someone in this newsgroup recommended this adaptor...

I don't have one, so I can't recommend one. I have a serial port that works
fine.

Re: Serial Ports and Vista
In addition to what others have said you could also have a power issue if
the serial connection is meant to power the solenoid releasing the drawer
and not just signal it to open. If the computer has a spare slot it might
be simpler to just add in an serial port card.
