Laptop CD Rom Issues

Hello,

I have a compaq presario V2000 model laptop. It has an AMD Sempron 3300+,
it has 1 GB RAM and 80GB HD. It came installed with XP and was marked Vista
Capable. I did upgrade to Vista and it has been working very well with one
exception, the CD Rom drive has issues. The DC rom shows as HL-DT-ST RW/DVD
GCC-4244N ATA Device. Here is the problem,

The computer does not "see" the CDRom at times. If I unseat and re-seat the
drive, it will recognize it for a while, then it vanishes again. What I
noticed today is that when it recognizes the drive it lists it as a
removable media. I have tried everything I can think of.
