I bought a new laptop but i am not able to type special characters like @, #,
$ % in windows Vista. Is there some onfiguration required for this?. Please
help.

Hi Vivek,

You can use Character Map to copy the special characters into whatever
you are typing in. This tutorial will show you how to open and use
Character Map.

What happens when you try? You may also have Numlock on. Refer to your
laptop manual for how to use the FN keys.

Can you type upper case letters when you use the shift key or do no upper
case characters work? You may have a bad keyboard.

Make sure you have the correct language version enabled. Different English
versions put those symbols on different keys.
