Left handed mouse

How do I save the amended settings for my mouse (trackball actually) to that
it does not revert to right handed after every shutdown?
I am getting into the habit of hibernating rather than shutting down, but
there are still a number of occasions when the computer shuts down for
updates etc.
I am gradually converting my system to a single Samsung Laptop from a
desktop + laptop with small memory.
