problem installing HP deskjet 3420

I've followed all the instructions, it tells me the software is installed,
but still won't print. I do not have the original disk for the printer so
have tried going through HP and following their instructions...I now know it
has been reclassified as 3500 series...still won't work. What am I doing
wrong???
