Vista and Wireless Print Server - Linksys WPS54G

After several hours of fruitless struggles with installation of this device,
I believe I have a solution that I can share with those of you who are having
similar challenges.

First off, take the nice green CD-ROM installation disk you received with
the device and set your coffee cup on it - nice coaster!

Next, attach your printer to the wireless print server and the print server
to your router using the CAT-cable supplied. Plug in the print server to a
power outlet.

Open your web browser and log on to the administration site, which is
192.168.2.101 - leave the user name blank and password = admin. Click on the
"Protocol" tab and chnage the option from automatically assign an IP address
to manually assign an IP address. I used 192.168.2.5. Your Subnet Mask
should be 255.255.255.0 and the Gateway is 192.168.2.1. Save these settings
and close the browser.

Next, open Control Panel in Vista and open the "Printers" folder. Click on
"Add a printer" and at the prompt, click on "Add a local printer". In the
next screen, click on "Create a new port". At the "Type of Port" prompt,
use the drop-down and select "Standard TCP/IP Port" and click next.

Under "Device Type" use the drop-down and select "TCP/IP device". The
Hostname or IP address for this device will be the address assigned in the
Protocol tab on the administration web page. (i.e. mine was 192.168.2.5).
Click the box that will allow the O/S to query the printer for the
appropriate driver and click "Next".

The "Additional Port Inforrmation" screen should open. Click on "Custom"
and then "Settings". Protocol = LPR and LPR settings are: Queue Name = LP1
and check on "LPR Byte Counting Enabled". Leave "SNMP Status Enabled"
unchecked. Click to return to the "Additional Port Information" screen.

Install the Printer Driver for your printer. Selct your manufacturer and
model from the list provided and click "Next".. If your printer was
previously installed, click the button to use the previously installed
driver. Click "Next" and assign a unique name to your wireless print server.
Print your Test Page and voila!

As an FYI... a WPS11 also works with Vista...

I use DLink DP-G321 and works well with my 3 XP systems but not my new Visat
machine. I loose the printer after a reboot and have to delete and reinstall
to get it to work again. I tried using the suggested settings (with my
assigned IP) but no go. . Suggestions?

To all those suffering with the "printer having to be deleted and
reinstalled again after reboot"

.....never fear. A simple solution is at hand.

Vista is just being naughty (as per!) , simply right-click your printer
icon and choose option to "use printer online".

thats it!

printer will now stay online after reboot.

must find the actual url of the Print Server before starting.
