microphone not recording

ok this is like 2 other questions already but to sum it up can you tell me
how to get my microphone to record i re-installed it but it doesn't pick up
any sound can you help me with this step-by-step for my vista

IF your audio adapter is properly installed... (no red X on the Notification
Area Speaker icon)

(What is your audio adapter? Control Panel (Classic view) > Device Manager >
expand Sound, video and game controllers)

Right click on the Speaker icon in the Notification Area of the Taskbar. Select
Recording Devices. Highlight Microphone (or whatever input you are connecting
your microphone to). Press Set Default button. Use the Configure and
Properties buttons to set up your microphone.
