CD/DVD drive only reading some discs

I have an Acer Aspire 4720z that is almost 2 years old. It contains all the original parts from the manufacturer. In the last two weeks, the CD/DVD drive is only reading some discs. The discs that are not being read are clean and new. It makes a lot of noise like it's looking for the disc, but then doesn't even seem to recognize that there's one there. Last week, our photographer friend burned us a CD of all our family pictures. I could not open the files on the disc, but if I went to My Computer, I could see that there were files occupying that drive. I was able to open the files on the disc with no problem on my other PC. All the drivers appear to be current, and all reports say the drive is acting correctly. I have tried uninstalling the drive, and then letting Windows recognize the drive and reinstall it...but it still is not working correctly. Any other ideas? Thank you.

And now I'm getting an error message that says "medium not present" when I put in a disc it doesn't want to read.

The most likely cause is a faulty CD Drive. It may be that cleaning the
lens in the drive will help.
CD/DVD drivers are not expensive, and a new one is usually less expensive
than paying someone to try and repair the old one. Since you have a laptop,
an external USB unit is likely your quickest and least expensive option,
other than opening up the laptop and replacing the internal unit with one
from the OEM.
