Please confirm that this is your issue:
When you insert your flash drive in a USB port, Vista attempts, but fails to
find drivers.

If the above is your situation, you can try the following:

The solution to this annoying problem (I had it on one PC), seems to be to
locate and delete the file INFCACHE.1, which may be corrupted and causing
the problem. To delete this file, you will first have to modify its
permissions so the users group can access it (right-click on the
file->Properties->Security).

INFCACHE.1 file. It's located at C:\Windows\inf (scroll down to the file).
(Note: to see INFCACHE.1, you must set Windows Explorer to display hidden
and system files)

After deleting INFCACHE.1, I used Device Manager to remove my USB hubs so
Vista could rediscover them.

RE: Vista Driver problems
you can read my saga in the Hardware and Devices newsgroup, posted 7/6 by
wwsras entitled: Ultra 4 port USB hub drive issue. I had the same issue as
you and went down many avenues but finally got the issue resolved. Hope this
link works and gets you these. Best of luck.

I've had the same problem in Vista 64 and solved it entirely by
accident, I could let you tear your hair out but I'm not that cruel so
I'll tell you what worked for me and that's a lot of patience!

When you plug in the flash drive, you get a "found new hardware"
message, do NOTHING! Wait. Patience is the key..... sooner or later
you'll get a message that the device failed to install and a popup to
search for a solution. Tell it to search online, it will fail to find
a solution and a pop up will tell you so. Tell it to seach "My
Computer" for a solution and be patient. Eventually, you'll see a
message that Vista is installing Generic Volume and that's it, you're
done! During the process, the UAC will rear it's ugly head several
times, just tell it all is OK.

Re: Vista Driver problems
Interesting. I received a different work around from "Freddy" from newsgroup
support. It was rather painless, but it took awhile before the fix found its
way to me. Glad to see yours was less painless. I'm sure there will be a fix
in SP1.

Re: USB Drive Problems with Vista

I believe that possibly during Vista installation, usbstor.inf (inf that
installs "USB Mass Storage Device") got corrupted or got accidentally deleted
from c:\Windows\inf. When usbstor.inf was restored to c:\Windows\inf and the
system was rebooted, the drives mounted normally again when the device is
plugged in.

There are two ways to get the usbstor.inf file

1. From another Vista system (copy it out of another Vista system and copy
it directly into the C:\Windows\inf directory)

2. If you only have 1 Vista system, run Command Prompt (Run as
administrator). From C:\ do a dir usbstor.inf /s . Wherever the file is
found, copy it to the C:\Windows\inf directory if it is missing from it. (I
remember it being in the driver store cache somewhere on the HDD)

Regards,

Rob

PS if you need a copy of the file you can have a friend email it to you but
make sure it's either zipped or change the file extension to .txt so your
email wont reject it then change it back to .inf and copy it............ Hope
this works for you too.
