I know this was posted over a week ago and that you are probably sorted,
but I have been living with the exact same problem.
I found out it had something to do with a dodgy Vista update KB935280.
So I uninstalled this update and downloaded it manually from the
Microsoft website and re-installed it.
It is sorted.
I have now turned off automatic updates, so they will only install when
I want to install them. (Although now my onecare is complaining that my
PC is 'at risk'! - but that is another problem to sort.)
I think the update hadn't finished installing when my PC needed a
restart from one of the other eight updates that night. I had put it
in sleep mode and it seems to do updates over night. And it hadn't
gone back to sleep, so I had to properly shut down and restart.
I am surprised that I could only find two posts on the whole of the
internet relating to this issue - and they were both from the same
dude!
