Having used both, in either XP or Vista, at one time or another, I
suggest you settle on NOD32 Antivirus. While it does cost around $40US,
it is probably the BEST AV client in existence.

While Avast Home version is "free", it is only "average" as a
virus/trojan/rootkit detector-remover". But it looks really "nice", and
has that neat moving icon in the Notification Area.

I am currently using Trend-Micro Internet Security 2007, and for these
reasons:
1) It is an "all-in-one" suite, containing AV, AntiSpam, Firewall,
Wireless protection, Parental controls, and Web site filtering.
2) It's "footprint" is nice and reasonable.
3) It seems to not use many resources in XP or Vista.
4) It does not slow down my machine, either in XP or Vista.
5) It's the most reasonably-priced ($49) suite.
6) It's efficacy is close to the top of the heap as far as being an
antivirus detector/remover.

It's ONLY bad part is it must be activated each time it is installed. If
you change anything about your HD (such as changing the Volume Label or
Volume ID), it will use up one of your THREE installations supplied with
the product. This means it may be installed on a maximum of three of your
machines at any one time. To reinstall it, you have to juggle around the
three allowed registered users, if you've already installed in on three
machines, or REINSTALLED your OS "clean" even ONCE.

Re: NOD32 or Avast?
I've increasingly shifted to NOD 32 from Norton AV -- doesn't take
resources, keeps itself updated regularly (not just weekly like AV).

You can try it for 30 days for free -- full version.

RE: NOD32 or Avast?
NOD32 every time!

When I first installed Windows x64 I installed Avast and gave up with it
after two viruses got onto my system. Avast warned me that they were there
but didn't prevent them getting on there in the first place! After much
fiddling to erradicate them I started looking into things a little more and
payed for NOD32 - very impressed.

Like you I have used Norton for years but won't be going back to it. The
way I look at Anti Virus and Firewall programs is that it's a very small
price to pay comapred to the irritation and time to reformat and start from
scratch!

Regards

AC

For those supporting multiple workstations at home, you can get a
'quantity discount' with Nod32 -- they offer 1, 2, 3, and 4 user home
licenses -- the four user license is $100.

Re: NOD32 or Avast?
NOD32, no contest. I'm running it (legally mind you) on 8 PC's in my own
home and I sell it preinstalled with every computer that goes thru my
Busniess. removing it is not even an option when my customers buys a
computer, I'll have it on there for free if needed, why? Because it saves me
A LOT of time to not have to answer 50 calls a day about viruses and odd
system behaviors. Only other antivirus that could compare would be Kaspersky
(who were a part of the development of NOD32) but they are much slower and
bloated.

Re: NOD32 with OneCare.?
Hello Barry,

Is Nod32 really Vista Ultimate Compatible.. Any CRASHES
or anything like that.?

I also used to use Norton, then went to ZoneAlarm and One
Care (still have OneCare), but, I'm looking to purchase a good
Anti-Virus / Firewall / Malware / Trojan system that works with
Windows Vista Ultimate without any problems.. Will Nod32
work with OneCare on the same computer, or will I have to
remove it if I purchase the Nod32.?

Thanks,
Ken

No problems at all -- I've run it on Vista Ultimate RC1 64 bit as well
as Vista Business 32.

As you've already read from the other replies, yes, NOD32 is Vista compatible.
You will need to remove OneCare if you choose to install NOD32. Never run two
active scanning or firewall security products concurrently as it will cause
performance problems and other unexpected behavior.
