Dual boot with XP

I never have gotten XP to run as a dual boot. I have Vista running OK. I
have XP cloned onto a separate hard drive in its own partition and it shows
up in the boot sequence ( I used VistaBoot Pro) after restart but it always
says it cannot find this file or that one.

If I try to repair or reinstall XP from the original install disk is there a
way to do it that will not erase the data and programs already installed in
XP? In other words a non-clean install.

Any other suggestions?

Yes, you can do a repair reinstall rather than a clean install. If you
install a second instance of XP, you should end up with a dual boot menu. I
don't think you'll get that menu from just putting in a separate hard drive
that has WinXP on it...winxp has to see the other installation during it's
install. I think it is the same with Vista.

You could also get a great program, BootitNG from Terabyte software, that
will set up as many operating systems as you would like and boot to
whichever you choose. Terabyte has tutorial videos that will walk you
through the process.

Thanks for the reply.

I am not sure that I made myself clear. I do not have a second instance of
XP on my machine. Only Vista as the primary OS and XP on a second drive that
will not boot from the boot menu at startup.

If I start the machine from the XP disc do I go to repair and then some
other selection to do the repair install?

Sounds like the C: and D: drives got swapped somewhere in
the process, in which case the XP program shortcuts and
corresponding registry entries have incorrect path references.
I recommend you do a fresh XP install using this procedure:

Disconnect the Vista drive and do a repair install of XP.
A Repair install will mess up the Vista boot unless you disconnect the Vista
drive.
