networking problems...

This suddenly happened, with no changes whatsoever on any machine on my
local area network (this machine is running Vista Ultimate, my son is
running Vista Home Premium, my wife is running XP Media).

When I click network on my Vista machine, I see an icon for my machine and
an icon for my son's machine, but no icon for my wife's machine. I used to
see icons for all three machines. The userid and password are the same for
my wife's machine on her machine and on my machine, just as my son's machine
has the same user ID and password on his machine and on my machine.

All three icons used to show up on my machine; and now I only see icons for
my machine and for my son's machine. If I click on my son's machine, I have
access to his machine and the files thereon, but there is no icon a
whatsoever to represent my wife's machine.

Any idea of what might be happening -- and why?

Well, I downloaded and installed the link on the XP box and then rebooted
it. In my Vista network map I hit F5 as recommended. My wife's machine,
the XP machine, still does not show. Looking at "My Network Places" on the
XP box I note that my Vista box icon does not show up either, although my
son's Vista home premium box is showing up both on my machine (Vista
Ultimate) and on my wife's machine, the XP box.
Additionally, my machine shows up on my son is machine, put my wife's
machine does not show up on my son's machine either.

Okay, I'm losing my hair from pulling it out!

One of the first things I tried! Disabling both firewalls -- the one on the
XP machine and the one on my Vista machine makes no difference: there is
only an icon representing my machine and my sons machine (both running
Vista).

One thing I just noted: when I try to access My Network Places on my wife's
machine, and I select Entire Windows Network, and then select the name of or
local area network ("RMGNET") my wife's machine is telling me that he cannot
access RMGNET, although that is how she accesses the Internet, which he has
no problem.

Wait!! I just checked my wife's machine, and now she has access to RMGNET!
However it only shows her machine and my sons machine!

Huh?

I am not very good with networks, but here are my network settings that work
for me:

Vista machine
In Network Sharing Center,
Customize, select Private network

Network discovery ON
File Sharing ON
Public folder Sharing ON
Printer Sharing ON
Paswword protected Sharing OFF
Media Sharing ON

My settings are set to same! However, still no luck; the XP machine is
still invisible on the Vista machine...

Try going through the Home network set up wizard again in your XP machine.
Make sure to share the HD (property, sharing).

Also make sure that you have the correct Workgroup name. (exactly the same)

It really sounds like a Firewall in the XP machine is making it invisible.

I'm having the same issues.

I have a Linux Laptop, and a Dell XP Home on a LAN with the New VISTA PC.

The other computers can all see the Vista, and a direct networking link I
made from the Vista to the XP works fine. But the Network link on Vista sees
no other machines, although for a couple of days it was.

This happens even though there are no firewalls up. I'm behind a
router-based firewall. Vista saw and connected to everything for 3 days, and
now it won't "discover" anything else.

I have turned off all firewalls on the XP machine, my Vista machine, and
even on my DSL modem (all temporarily of course!) And still the XP machine
is hidden both from my Vista machine and from my son's of Vista machine, all
on the same network.

Even when trying to access to machine with a UNC from a command prompt,
Windows Explorer, or Internet Explorer it doesn't show...
