Shrinking hard drive
Hi group,
HP a1700n with 250GB hard drive and Vista is brand new. Have downloaded no
more than about 500MB of data since I bought it, yet hard drive indicator
shows I have lost more than 10GB of space. Have scanned for viruses and
spyware, have defragged and cleaned disk, and have cleaned temp folder.
Available space out of the box was 226GB with 201GB free. Indicator now shows
191GB free. No way I could have added 10GB of data to the disk. Anybody know
where the space might be going?
Thanx,
Chet

Re: Shrinking hard drive
You've covered the basics so it points toward the "System Volume
Information" folder filling up.
Every time you install/uninstall apps it creates a new restore point. Each
file can be anywhere between 100MB to 450MB and it soon starts to add up.
Try the following (only if you are happy with the current performance of
your PC and all the apps installed are working as intended):--
Right Click on Computer (my computer) and choose properties.
Choose Advanced system settings from the left plane of the window.
Select the System Protection Tab on the new window.
Sounds like you only have a single disk partition (Drive C) so remove the
tick and click Apply
Now replace the tick in Drive C and click Apply
Click on the Create button to make a new restore point (because at this
point you have nothing to fall back on), then give it a name and then OK all
the way out and close the windows.
You should see quite a bit more free space recovered.
Hope this helps

More than likely it's System Restore points being created.
You can use Disk Cleanup (More Options tab) to delete all
but the last restore point. I also recommend CrapCleaner
to delete all those temp files that Disk Cleanup does not.

Re: Shrinking hard drive
Ron Jon,
That worked great. Thank you. I had to find another route to the System
Protection folder since yours wasn't quite working for me, but once I got
there, I recovered all the hard drive space I had "lost." I've just upgraded
from a Windows 98 computer, and I was unfamiliar with "restore points." Guess
I'll pay attention now.
thanx,
Chet
