Dragon Naturally Speaking, and Vista

Hey everyone,

The college that I attend (and am a work-study in the computer lab for)
is planning on upgrading to Vista either this Summer or next Fall. One of
their questions is, are there any known issues between Dragon Naturally
Speaking, and Vista. Since they teach dictation with Dragon, they need to
look at their options before they upgrade.
We had ran into an issue with "SAM 2003" (for the Thompson Direct
courses) and Internet Explorer 7 (on XP), so that's the basis for the
question.

There are issues with Dragon Naturally Speaking.
Scansoft has created a new full install upgrade for Dragon
which will be called version 9.5. It is compatable with Vista
and the New Office 2007.

If your college is contemplating upgrading to Vista he will
probably need to upgrade Dragon as well.

Nuance has downloads available that upgrade the lower versions of
NaturallySpeaking for compatibility with Vista. The "upgrades" for the
Professional, Legal and Medical versions are still listed as "coming
soon". See: http://www.nuance.com/vista/
An interesting question, the answer to which is unknown at this time, is
whether or not the upgrade for Vista compatibility will also be
compatible with XP/Windows 2003.
For those who are interested in speech recognition, I would strongly
recommend NatuallySpeaking over Microsoft Speech. The recognition
accuracy and features are vastly superior in NaturallySpeaking.

I agree. As a handicapped person I use Dragon Naturally Speaking
Professional. It is vastly superior to what Microsoft is offering under
Vista! Just to give you an idea: before becoming handicapped, I typed at
over 100 words per minute. With Dragon Naturally Speaking, and a little bit
of training, I was at about 55 of words per minute. With Microsoft Speech -
fully trained - I'm stuck at about 30 words per minute. The amount of time
I spend correcting errors in my postings with Vista is ridiculous.
Unfortunately, it looks like current versions of Dragon Naturally Speaking
are not compatible with Vista Ultimate, so I'm stuck running this inferior
product!

Just to give you an idea: under windows XP, this posting would have taken
just under 2 minutes. Under Vista, it took almost 15 minutes!

I'm of the opinion that this software for Microsoft for speech recognition
stinks!

It is my understanding that the Vista Upgrades require a
complete reinstall of Dragon, since most people will need to do
a complete reinstall for Vista they should do it at that time.

The Profession 9.5 version is compatable with XP, but
interestingly, must be completely reinstalled if there is an in
place upgrade of XP to Vista.

Thanks for the answers everyone. I've forwarded them onto my
instructor/supervisor, and she'll forward them on to the right people from
there. They're planning on upgrading to Vista either late this Summer, or
next Fall, so we have time. Some labs will be upgraded to Vista this
Summer, while the rest are slated for next year.

I don't think you can load Dragon NaturallySpeaking version 9.0, or any previous version on Windows Vista. I just bought a brand-new Dell Inspiron laptop with a dual core processor. It has Windows Vista basic home edition for its operating system. I could not load a valid copy of Dragon NaturallySpeaking version 9.0 on it, much to my severe disappointment.

You'll probably have to wait until they release a Vista version of Dragon.
In the meantime, you can use the built-in speech recognition.

Hi Jerry,

Nuance already has some updates available for NaturallySpeaking version
9 to 9.5 which is Vista compatible. The higher end updates are not ready
as yet.
