Windows Mail - preview pane not safe?
I haven't used OE in a while but I understand Windows Mail is the newest
version. I was wondering if I need to do the same things I used to do with
OE such as disabling the preview pane and stuff. Or, will WM automatically
disable links and images until you add people to your contacts?

Like OE6 sp2, Windows Mail has built in security for images (which you can
turn off) so images are blocked. Just click the bar to allow the images and
they will load into the email.

But will simply opening the message without the images verify your email
address to spammers?

This may or may not work, but it may be worth a try. I think I read
somewhere that you can configure Window Mail so that it blocks images unless
they come from someone on your Safe Sender list. If the sender is "safe,"
it will download the images automatically. Unless you put spammers on your
Safe Sender list -- something that I would not recommend -- Windows Mail
will still block their images.

If you try it, let us know if it works. I'm curious myself.

Ken

No. Not if you either have it set under Tools | Options | Security to block
linked images and other external content or have it set under Tools |
Options | Read to read in plain text only for the super paranoid and HTML
haters.

Re: Windows Mail - preview pane not safe?
You're right. I tested it myself a while ago. Frankly, I would rather see
the pictures, especially if they are coming from a source I trust. It helps
that my ISP has excellent spam-blocking skills at the server level.
